Wasef Bakhtari had waited for Ivan outside the brothel, and it had been a long wait. The entire night, and in the morning, he was cold, tired, and hungry. Still, he stayed at his post. He didn’t envy his boss, and regarded his spending time with a whore as beneath contempt, an insult to the teachings of the Prophet. Although he’d discovered the benefits of worshipping a different God, one called money, and the salary Ivan paid him each month was building into a sizeable sum, enough to pay the people smugglers to get him to either the United States or Europe. A better life beckoned, all he needed was the down payment.

Then again, there were links even more powerful than religion and money, the links of family. He’d overheard them discussing a notorious rival, the Turkman Yusuf Odev. Wasef Bakhtari was a Turkman. A distant relation of Odev, the cousin of an uncle he was very close to. If he did nothing, and this American killed Odev, the family honor would be tainted. He’d given it a great deal of thought during the long, cold night, weighing up the differing loyalties to Ivan and to his family. By the end of the night, he had it straight in his own mind, and he could manage to accommodate both. As long as he chose his moment carefully, he could contact Yusuf Odev, and Ivan would never know. The American would die when Odev attacked, and the warlord would give him a substantial reward. He was satisfied he’d come to the right decision. All he need do was make the call without getting caught.
